The Benefits of Meditation

There is really only two benefits that I will be talking about when it comes to meditation. There are many science backed benefits that I will not cover. Meditation will make you more aware. It won’t make you more aware of the outside world like some sort of superhuman, but it will make you more aware of your internal world. You will become more aware of your feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Meditation will also help you cultivate love for self.

Nobody likes being angry and many times, people don’t even realize that they are becoming angry. However, if you meditate it will make you more aware of your current emotions, and you might possibly catch yourself becoming angry and be able to stop it. This has happened to me a few times. I have been in the middle of a road rage, angry yell and just stopped mid-yell. This is a victory that was caused by awareness. When you are aware of your emotions and feelings, when a negative emotion comes up, the awareness you have cultivated makes it possible for you to do something about that negative emotion before it controls you. You become aware of your internal state at all times which will make you a happier person because if you are unhappy you will be aware of it and do something to change it. Many times people will just sit in their negative emotion feeling the emotion, but unaware that they’re in that state and they will unconsciously choose to stay there. When you are aware, you might enter the state of the negative emotion, but you will be aware of it, and now you can consciously choose to do something about it or sit there and mope around.

Awareness is also important because during the journey of personal development and self actualization, your awareness can help you realize if you have any toxic traits. This is very important. This is the key thing about building your awareness. When you spend enough time with yourself you will start to notice the good things about yourself and also any negative things about yourself. Obviously, keep up the good things, but as you become aware of your negative or toxic personality traits, start to work on eliminating them.

The next main benefit of meditation is the cultivation of love for self. There are many forms of escapism now-a-days. Escapism is escaping the dull, boring, and painful reality that day to day life is. You can get drunk, you can get high, or you can pull out your phone, all in an effort to escape the current reality, and escape the feeling of being with yourself and the moment. When was the last time you just sat and did nothing? No phone, no music, and no YouTube videos. I think that phones have made it really easy for people to not sit with themselves and just be. When you are meditating you are just sitting there with yourself. This might sound weird, but ask yourself when was the last time you sat with yourself and didn’t have any external distractions to block out your internal pain or the countless thoughts that you have no control over? Meditation counteracts that, you have to sit there and be with yourself and watch the thoughts as they arise. The more time you spend with yourself, the more you can learn to love yourself and be comfortable with yourself.
